Subject: Ageinces working to avert cat crisis - adoptions needed
Animal welfare organizations around the province are joining forces to help an animal shelter in Saint John cope with the staggering number of cats currently in its care – all in the name of saving more lives.

The Saint John Animal Rescue League faces a dire situation. With more than 100 kittens and cats already in foster care, the building is stretched to the seams with as many as 150 cats in a facility meant to house no more than 100.

In an effort to reduce the immediate threat of overcrowding at the Animal Rescue League, about 54 kittens are being transferred to the Fredericton SPCA for a weekend adoption event, 13 more are being sent into their foster care and several adults cats may be transferred to the Oromocto SPCA.

Those kittens will be available for adoption this weekend at the Fredericton PetSmart store’s fall adoption drive, coordinated by the Fredericton SPCA. Volunteers and store staff will be at the Fredericton store from Friday afternoon at 3 pm through closing on Sunday to assist with adoptions.

While adoptions will be processed on site, the kittens will need to remain in the care of the Fredericton SPCA until they have had their spay or neuter surgeries next week. It is expected all kittens can go into their new homes before the end of next week.

“We need the public to open their hearts and their homes to help us save lives. We, like all our partners in animal welfare in this province, believe increased awareness is the first step, but in times like this we need the public to act,” said Stephanie Walsh, executive director of the Fredericton SPCA.

We need the public's support. Thank you for helping us save lives and spread the word.
