For feeding your new kitten I suggest continuing Iams Kitten food in the purple bag available at Walmart and grocery stores. Moisten it with warm water for the first few weeks you have your new baby. I offer this four or five times a day while they are little gradually increasing the amount. This mixture is safe at room temperature for 6 hours. Gradually my kittens eat Iams Kitten Food dry. I give my cats and kittens a small amount of Astro Brand Balkan Yogurt (in the red and white container) every day. Do not ever give your cat or kitten milk. Do not feed any cat treats until the kitten is at least eight months old. If you and your vet decide to change from Iams Kitten food, please wait for seven to ten days after the kitten is in your home.
Please do not feed your cat canned cat food or food from the table. Medi-Cal, available from your veterinarian is olso an excellent food. Eukanuba, Science Diet and Royal Canin dry foods are excellent and are available at PetSmart and Animal Essentials in Fredericton. I offer fresh water at all times. All my cat dishes are washed daily. Cat dishes must be stainless steel or china. Do not use plastic dishes. If you are planning to take a kitten home with you, please bring a clean two litre jar or bottle with you. I like my kittens to have water from my home to use for the first week. Stir three packets of Knox Gelatin (in the orange box) into one and a half cups of hot water. Add two egg yolks, 1 tsp of liquid honey and one container of Astro Balkan Yogurt that is 3.5 % milk fat. Do not substitute the yogurt brand or type. This keeps in the fridge for 10 days. I warm a small amount in the microwave and use a small animal nurser available from your veterinarian. The nipple hole should be the size of a ten point diamond! Smaller than this and the kitten won't get enough milk in enough time. They become easily exhausted by nursing! I give this formula to all my newborn kittens within five minutes of being birthed - they have their mom too. I help her out by supplementing the newborns morning and evening for fourteen days. It's a great head start!
